The Story:
The ringing in her ears slowly faded into a distant mummer. It was at that moment she realized she couldn’t open her eyes. She felt the burning fluorescents bleeding through her eyelids. She felt the stares of the people whispering in the room as the echoing footsteps moved closer. The buoyant sensation of people moving her made her dizzy. She then realized she had no feeling. Confused, she thought it unnatural that her heart wasn’t racing. In fact she couldn’t feel her heart beating at all. Nor did she feel her lungs expand with air. Panicking, a strange sensation rolled over her as the lights went black and the sounds of muttered voices and reverberating footsteps were drowned with the sound of heavy rain.
As she stood she rejoiced in the sensation as the wet ground enveloped her feet. The cold rain ran down her chest as car lights streamed past in flashes of neon. She was remembering. As the rain ricocheted off her raw skin, worry sunk in. She staggered forward with each step sinking deeper into the porous earth. She then found herself on the coarse grain of the street pavement. The unfriendly texture scratched at the soles of her feet. She struggled to recall the moments. The sound of the rain grew heavy as the light of the passing cars glared brighter.
Suddenly it all stopped. The artificial light seared her immobile eyes as the voices returned. She felt weightless. Her frantic mind became collected. It was in that moment she realized who she was. She paused at the absurdity of this revelation. Of course she is who she knows herself to be. She could remember what rain felt like as it rolled over her shoulders. She was reminded of the sensation of sound as it vibrated the air around her as cars thundered by. She recognized the frigid wind pushing into her body. The unsettling realization that feeling is now only a memory, clouded her mind.
Then, like a spark igniting, the question burned its way to the forefront of her consciousness. It was such a trivial question. The question lingered in her mind, floating like a light in the distance. It overwhelmed her as it grew bigger and brighter.
